Case Study:
Family Members of Cardiac Patient Alerted Through KARDIOGEN Test

PATIENT INFORMATION:
A 31-year-old man felt sudden chest pain while at work. On noticing his discomfort, his colleagues rushed him to the hospital. He was diagnosed with myocardial infarction and underwent Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG). The patient had a strong history of cardiac disease on the paternal side in his family – his father and two uncles underwent CABG procedures at a young age.

He and his family members were advised to undergo the Kardiogen test to assess their genetic risk for coronary artery disease.

Testing and Results: Kardiogen test for the patient and his family was undertaken at Genessense, MedGenome. The results were as follows:

Sample Age Gender Kardiogen Risk Score (KRS) Odds Ratio Risk Comments
Patient 31 Male 1.028 2.53 High High risk of coronary artery disease
Father 56 Male 0.79 1.67 High Had CABG procedure at 36 years
Mother 53 Female -0.01 < 1 Moderate
Brother 25 Male 1.77 2.42 High Advised frequent follow-up and diet restrictions
Sister 26 Female -0.345 < 1 Average

Result Interpretation:
The patient, his brother and his father were found to have a high KRS and Odds Ratio and were at high risk for cardiac disease. His sister was at average risk – comparable to population risk. The Kardiogen Risk Score has alerted the younger brother to his high risk of developing cardiac disease thus making him vigilant and helping him take preventive action through better lifestyle management, diet and regular follow-ups and check-ups with a cardiologist.
